A Milestone Fueled by Community
Despite the summer heat, the energy at Kinship Community Food Center's groundbreaking was undeniable. Neighbors, supporters, project partners, elected officials, and community leaders gathered at the corner of Holton and Locust to celebrate a milestone years in the making. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley joined Kinship leadership and partners to mark the occasion, underscoring the significance of this investment in the city's future.
The incredible turnout reflected what this project truly represents: a shared commitment to creating a place where food becomes a catalyst for connection, opportunity, and long-term community well-being. Throughout the event, there was a genuine sense of excitement about what this new center will mean for Milwaukee.
One of the day's most meaningful moments came when attendees wrote messages of hope and encouragement on stones that will become part of the building's foundation.
It was a powerful reminder that this building is literally being built on the support, dreams, and aspirations of the community it will serve.
A Space Designed for Connection
Located between Milwaukee's Riverwest and Harambee neighborhoods, the new 28,000-square-foot Community Food Center will be much more than a place to access groceries. The facility will feature a free public market, commercial teaching kitchen, greenhouse, food storage, community gathering spaces, offices, and dedicated space for partner organizations and workforce development programs.
Kinship's vision is to use food as an entry point to something much bigger: connecting neighbors with employment opportunities, counseling, crisis resources, health and wellness services, and a strong sense of belonging. The new center is expected to dramatically expand Kinship's capacity to serve Milwaukee families while creating a welcoming hub for the entire community.
