SUSTAINABILITY
At VJS, we believe every project is an opportunity to create lasting value, trusted partnerships, and stronger communities.
Building with Purpose means taking responsibility for how our work impacts people, places, and the environment—and integrating sustainability into everything we do
OUR COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
We embed sustainable practices throughout every phase of our projects—from design and material selection to construction and long-term performance. By leveraging advanced technologies, environmentally responsible materials, and efficient construction methods, we reduce waste, conserve resources, and minimize carbon impact.
We collaborate closely with clients, suppliers, and partners to promote shared accountability for environmental and social responsibility. Several of our project managers are LEED-accredited professionals, and our teams receive continuous training in sustainable and lean construction principles to ensure these values are lived out on every jobsite.
OUR APPROACH IN ACTION

Sustainability is more than a concept—it’s how we build. Our approach emphasizes:
-
Reducing carbon and waste through efficient logistics and materials reuse
-
Conserving energy and water through smart systems and green building design
-
Creating healthier environments for building users and surrounding communities
Beyond our projects, our employees support local sustainability efforts through community cleanups and environmental volunteer initiatives, reflecting our belief that stewardship extends beyond the jobsite.
BUILDING RESILIENT COMMUNITITES
A great example of our sustainability in action is the Urban Ecology Center’s Washington Park Branch—Milwaukee County’s first all-electric, non-residential building, eliminating the use of natural gas entirely. Designed for future solar integration, the facility incorporates:
-
High-performance insulation and windows for energy efficiency
-
Air-sourced heat pumps for heating and cooling
-
Reuse of salvaged materials and repurposed ash trees from Washington Park
-
Low/zero VOC finishes and bird-safe glazing to protect people and wildlife

The wood from the existing Washington Park Community room was used to create woodblock art pieces.

Existing wood doors were repurposed into sliding barn doors for the second-floor classroom.

The existing ash wood trim was installed together on the reception desk to create a decorative front.
This project reflects a holistic approach to sustainability—one that reduces environmental impact while enhancing community resilience, education, and wellbeing.
As builders and as people, we know every decision we make leaves a mark. By building with purpose, we ensure that our work today contributes to a more sustainable tomorrow—creating spaces that serve people, protect the environment, and strengthen the communities we call home.
