With a recent ribbon-cutting celebration, community leaders, residents, and partners gathered to mark an exciting new chapter for the Menomonee Falls Community Center.
For nearly three decades, the center has served as a place where people come together for recreation, programs, and community connection. Originally opened in 1996 through a partnership between the Village of Menomonee Falls and the School District of Menomonee Falls, the facility was built as an addition to Riverside Elementary School. The newly completed expansion honors that legacy while creating modern, accessible spaces designed to support growing programs and serve the community for years to come.
Meeting the Needs of a Growing Community
Over time, recreation, fitness, and enrichment programs expanded to serve residents of all ages, while Riverside Elementary and Quest, the district’s alternative high school program, experienced increasing demand for space for physical education and music programs. Because the school and Community Center shared the gymnasium and several key spaces, coordinating schedules often limited daytime community access and created frequent scheduling conflicts. The expansion provides additional space that better supports both school activities and community programming. Superintendent David Munoz states, "When the original facility was [built] in 1996, nobody had an idea that we were going to have this much programming for the community. Because of the Rec staff, the programming has absolutely exploded."
Improving Safety and Accessibility
The original layout also created safety and accessibility challenges. Community members attending programs, particularly those held in the lower-level exercise and dance studio, often needed to pass through areas used by students. During busy periods this created unnecessary overlap between students and visitors. The two-story layout also made it difficult for some participants, especially older adults, to comfortably access lower-level program spaces.
A Facility Designed for Community Access
The completed expansion introduces a new gymnasium and additional community center space designed specifically for Community Education and Recreation programming. All programs now operate on a single level, improving accessibility and creating a more convenient experience for participants. With additional capacity, activities such as pickleball, fitness classes, enrichment programs, preschool movement classes, and community events can take place throughout the day without disrupting school schedules.
Separate Spaces, Stronger Safety
The project also creates clearer separation between school and community spaces. Dedicated program areas reduce shared traffic during school passing periods and enhance safety for Riverside and Quest students while maintaining convenient access for residents attending programs. At the same time, shifting community activities into the new spaces has opened additional gym availability within the schools, allowing educational programming to operate more efficiently.
Strengthening a Community Hub
Since opening in 1996, the Menomonee Falls Community Center has been a place where residents gather to stay active, connect with neighbors, and participate in community life. The completed expansion builds on that legacy by improving accessibility, increasing capacity, and creating safer, more efficient spaces for both students and the public. The result is a facility designed to better serve the Menomonee Falls community today and into the future.
