VJS carpenters battled through cutting shiplap pieces of Ipe, one of the strongest woods in the world, for the exterior of the elephant barn building. This wood has been known to last well over 75 years and is very low maintenance.
Many of the doors in the hoofstock building open via a pulley system so that the zookeepers never have to be in the same containment unit as an animal. It was estimated that approximately 7,360 bolt holes had to be pre-drilled through the 1/4″ containment walls and 3/16″ containment angles in order to be able to hang all the 2×6’s that VJS carpenters installed.
