As a way to boost the area workforce, VJS Construction Services worked with subcontractors and The Guest House to provide training and employment opportunities to residents throughout construction of Prairie Apartments. Following a job skill assessment, WHEDA worked with WRTP/BIG STEP, a job training organization, and VJS to identify a group of candidates deemed suitable for immediate training and placement. Several residents worked in masonry, painting and cleaning. In addition, four residents were hired to provide security on the site. Those who required further steps to get through the training component participated in a skills assessment and improvement program. VJS had over thirty percent of EBE contractor participation which exceeds both the City of Milwaukee and WHEDA participation goals.
To date, 11 current or former residents of The Guest House have been trained in the electrical, plumbing, flooring, roofing, and masonry trades. In addition, two of the participants have been placed on other WHEDA projects and still others utilized the WRTP/BIG STEP manufacturing training component to secure other job opportunities. In particular, one man working in masonry finished The Guest House program and moved into an apartment of his own. VJS continues to use residents of The Guest House as apprentices on their projects.
